Secrets of the trunk

What is it about an old trunk that captures our attention?

Perhaps, it is the trunk’s worn exterior, scratched lock or dented top that lends it an aura of mystery.

Trunks have stories to tell. They are waiting for us to open their locks, to lift their lids and to look inside them.

I can remember as a young boy being fascinated with my grandfather’s trunk. I knew that he kept special things about his life in that trunk. Things that were from his early life in Taiwan.

One day, when no one was around, I quickly went to where he kept his old trunk.I eagerly pulled it towards me and slowly opened up its creaking lid. Inside I discovered history.

There was a small photo of my gradmother and a locket she used to wear. She looked so young and lovely, especially with the single flower in her hair.

There were treasures from the war, a small pistol and a bag of bullets.

There were his eyeglasses, scratched from wear.

There were also documents…to frail to unfold, so I left their story untold…

Then, reluctantly, I pushed that old trunk back against the wall, wondering, if it could talk, what stories it would tell me.

木箱的秘密

是怎樣的老木箱可以擄獲我們的目光呢?

也許…是老木箱外表布滿歲月的印記，班剝的外觀，坍塌的上蓋還是腐蝕的鎖頭，賦予老箱子的秘密太多了….一個「謎」的老木箱。

也許老木箱正等著我們去解開它的鎖，等著跟我們敘述它獨特的塵封故事，契合的心促使我掀起期待…

當我還是小男孩時，爺爺也有個木箱，我對爺爺的木箱充滿著好奇，像對潘朵拉的秘密盒一樣。我明白這木箱裡，保留著爺爺這一輩子最特別的東西，那些早年他在台灣的記憶線索。

有一天，四處無人，我無法抑制好奇的心，氣喘噓噓跑向藏木箱的地方，摸到它輕輕的將木箱拉向我，緩緩的撥開木箱上灰塵，咯吱咯吱聲是我慢慢的打開它的唯一回應，相對的是我撲通撲通的心跳聲。

爺爺的歷史縮影都在這在木箱內，打開一個以前屬於祖母裝飾品的珠寶盒，我看到祖母的照片靜靜的躺在那裡，她看起來年輕又可愛，特別是她頭上還別上一朵小花，有種青春的氣息感染著我，尤其是那淡淡的笑容。

木箱中還有爺爺從戰場上帶回的寶貝，一把小手槍和一個裝著子彈的小袋子
